<p>On 6 September 2026, Saxony-Anhalt held its state election. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) took 43.8% of the vote and 39 of 83 seats, three short of a majority on its own. Three days later, Chancellor Merz stood up in the Bundestag and twice described the AfD&rsquo;s &ldquo;remigration&rdquo; as ethnic cleansing by origin and skin colour.
